  9. QUICK START
  10. ========================

  12. If you read nothing else, please read the following:
  13. You MUST make one customization the the .html file, and upload
  14. the "justedit" directory to YOUR WEB SERVER before using this
  15. product.  Please do the following simple steps:
  16.  
  17. 1.) Open the file named "justedit.html" with any text editor
  18. (Notepad for Windows, or SimpleText for Mac will do the job).
  19.  
  20. 2.) Find the line in the file that currently reads: <param
  21. name="Host" value="ftp.yourdomain.com">, and change the value
  22. from "ftp.yourdomain.com" to your FTP host name.  This should be
  23. the same host name you use to FTP files to your web server.
  24.  
  25. 3.) Upload the directory (or folder) named "justedit" to your 
  26. web server (or ISP) using any FTP application.
  27.  
  28. Now open the page: /justedit/justedit.html  located on your
  29. website and follow the remaining instructions there.  Or, read
  30. the complete User Guide included in this Read Me file.

  35. Congratulations!  You now can edit your web pages, right in the
  36. most common web browsers. JustEdit uses no server or client side
  37. application and gives you the ability to quickly edit web pages on
  38. the web using only Microsoft Internet Explorer (tm) or Netscape
  39. Navigator (tm), v 4.0 or later.

  41. JustEdit is the quick and painless way to edit your web pages
  42. anytime, anywhere, as often as you like.  Imagine being able to
  43. correct a typo, update a headline, price, or date, and even correct
  44. a broken or changed link, on the fly, right in a browser!  Using
  45. JustEdit, there's no need to start an FTP application, find a
  46. source file, or download the file from the web, start a web page
  47. editor, make the changes, save the changes, then re-upload the
  48. file.  Now you can change the contents of any web page immediately,
  49. right in a web browser.  Never again will you be wasting time by
  50. "round-tripping" web files back and forth to your web server, or
  51. needlessly searching for html files on your local hard disk! Or
  52. making a frantic call back to the office, trying to talk someone
  53. through making a change.

  62. cost.  This version of JustEdit adds a single line at the bottom of
  63. each edited page promoting JustEdit, and does not include technical

  65. shareware, demoware or freeware software is available.  You may use
  66. the promotional version on as many web sites as you like.  Altering
  67. or modifying the operation of JustEdit, in any way, voids this

  90. JustEdit requires a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer
  91. (tm), Netscape Navigator (tm), Netscape Communicator (tm) (version
  92. 4.0 or later), or the AOL (tm) browser (version 4.0 or later), and
  93. a way to initially upload (FTP) the JustEdit files to your web
  94. server or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  99. INSTALLATION
  100. ========================

  102.      1.) Unzip all files into any directory (Macintosh users should
  103. uncompress the .sit file).  This process will result in a single
  104. directory named "justedit", containing two files, "justedit.jar",
  105. and "index.html".
  106.  
  107.      2.) Open the file named "justedit.html" found within the
  108. "justedit" directory with any text editor (Notepad for Windows, or
  109. SimpleText for Macintosh will do the job here).
  110.  
  111.      3.) Find the line in the file that currently reads: <param
  112. name="Host" value="ftp.yourdomain.com">, and change the Host value
  113. from "ftp.yourdomain.com" to your FTP host name.  This should be
  114. the same host name you use to FTP files to your web server.  For
  115. example, if your web site is www.cnn.com, this line should read:

  117. close the file and save the change.

  126. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

  129. Using JustEdit couldn't be easier.  Make sure you have followed the
  130. above Installation instructions before proceeding.

  134. --Editing Pages--
  135.  
  136. JustEdit can be used to edit ANY web page on your web site.  The
  137. steps that follow will explain how to edit one page on your site,
  138. and will apply to all pages on your site.  You can even open
  139. multiple pages and edit them together.
  140.  
  141.      1.) Using your web browser, identify the web page you would
  142. like to edit and make a note of the name of the page and the path
  143. to the file.  For example, if you want to edit the web page that
  144. exists at the URL http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html, then the
  145. name of the page and path you need to make a note of is simply
  146. "index.html".  However, if the page is found at the URL
  147. http://www.yourdomain.com/coolstuff/tiger.html, then the name of
  148. the page and the path you need to make a note of is
  149. "coolstuff/tiger.html".
  150.  
  151.      2.)  Using your web browser, open your JustEdit page --
  152. located on your own web site.  Unless you have changed its name, the
  153. page will be found at: http://www.yourdomain.com/justedit/justedit.html
  154. (where "www.yourdomain.com" is the URL of your website).
  155.  
  156.      3.) Enter your name, password, and the name and path to the
  157. page you want to edit, then press the "Open" button.  Your name and
  158. password are the same ones given to you by your ISP or network
  159. administrator.  The name of the page you want to edit is the one
  160. you made a note of in step #1, plus any special FTP path name
  161. requirements.  For example, if your web page is served from a
  162. directory named "public_html", you will need to add this to the
  163. beginning of the path name to your page.  In the examples used in
  164. step #1, the index.html page would look like,
  165. "public_html/index.html".  Think of the name and path to your page
  166. as the full FTP path name beginning after the domain name.
  167.  
  168.      4.) Edit the contents of your web page using the text edit
  169. window that is now open on your screen.  Keep in mind that this is
  170. a very simple text editor which allows to you edit the HTML code.
  171. It is not a web page-layout editor.  You can re-size the window by
  172. dragging its lower right corner or using the minimize/maximize
  173. button.  You can also re-size the text displayed in the editor by
  174. clicking the font size buttons in the lower left corner of the edit
  175. window (the default size is always 12 pt).

  177.      5.) When finished editing your page, click the Save button in
  178. the bottom right corner of the text edit window.  The save button
  179. will perform a "safe save" function.  That is, it will first rename
  180. the original file with a ".bak" extension.  Second, it will save
  181. the edited file.  Last, and only after the newly edited file has
  182. been transferred successfully, it will delete the ".bak" file.

  184.     6) If you are viewing the edited web page, you will need to
  185. Refresh your browser to see any changes.

  188. That's it!  You can edit any page on the web site containing
  189. JustEdit as long as you have the correct name and password for the
  190. web site.  Use JustEdit to correct typos, update headlines, prices,
  191. or dates, and even correct broken or changed links on the fly in
  192. your browser.  You'll find editing web pages so simple, you'll do
  193. it more often!

  197. --Changing Parameters--
  198.  
  199. There are five parameters that can be modified to customize your
  200. JustEdit page.  Change any of the following parameters by editing
  201. the justedit/index.html page on your web site using JustEdit:
  202.  
  203. <param name="BGColor" value="#66CCFF">:  Changes the background
  204. color of the JustEdit log-in fields.  Enter any valid html color
  205. (hex).
  206.  
  207. <param name="Host" value="ftp.yourdomain.com">: Changes the FTP
  208. site JustEdit logs in to (see step #3 in the Installation section
  209. above).
  210.  
  211. <param name="User" value="">: Entering a value between the quote
  212. marks will make JustEdit remember your user name--allowing you
  213. faster log in.  Keep in mind that supplying your name here will
  214. make your ftp access less secure.  For the highest level of
  215. security, it is always best to leave this value blank.

  217. <param name="Pass" value="">:  Entering a value between the quote
  218. marks will make JustEdit remember your password--allowing you
  219. faster log in.  Keep in mind that supplying your name here will
  220. make your ftp access less secure.  For the highest level of
  221. security, it is always best to leave this value blank.

  223. <param name="Path" value="">:  Entering a value between the quote
  224. marks will make JustEdit remember a path to a file.  Doing so will
  225. save you time editing a specific page.  For example, entering
  226. "public_html/users/coolstuff/" will make it easier to edit pages in
  227. the "coolstuff" directory of your web site.  Entering
  228. "public_html/users/coolstuff/mypage.html" will make it easy to edit
  229. the specific page, "mypage.html".

  233. --Other Tips--
  234.  
  235. If you regularly edit several pages, you can create multiple
  236. JustEdit log-in fields on a single page.  Simply duplicate the html
  237. code in the justedit/index.html page beginning with the line
  238. "<applet" and ending with the line "</applet>" and paste it several
  239. times in the page.  Next, change each of the <param name="Path"
  240. value=""> lines to have the values of the pages you wish to
  241. regularly edit.  Now, editing a specific page will be a simple
  242. matter of going to your JustEdit page and entering your name and
  243. password into the appropriate JustEdit log-in fields.

  245. You can open and edit more than one page simultaneously.  Even if
  246. you only have one JustEdit log-in field on your JustEdit page, you
  247. can open as many pages as you like for editing.  Simply open one
  248. page, then click on the browser window displaying the JustEdit
  249. log-in field.  Next, enter a new page name and path in the "Path"
  250. field.  Repeating these steps several times will allow you to open
  251. and edit several pages at the same time.

  253. You can use Cut, Copy, and Paste in the JustEdit page editor window
  254. using the keyboard shortcuts Control-X, Control-C, and Control-V
  255. (Windows users only).

  259. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  260. ========================

  262. 1.) Macintosh users may experience some difficulty using Netscape
  263. Communicator 4.5.
  264.  
  265. 2.) Macintosh users may have some difficulty using cut, copy, and
  266. paste in the text edit window.
